How to Get a Wholesale License in Florida

by Patti Perry

In Florida, a business license is required to buy wholesale. A new business needs to first obtain an EIN number, or employer identification number, from the Internal Revenue Service. After you complete the required paperwork with the federal and Florida state governments, you are eligible to make wholesale purchases.

Decide whether your business will be a sole proprietorship or if you want to incorporate.

Apply for an Employer Identification Number (EIN) from the Internal Revenue Service. This is accomplished online, by phone, fax or mail. All methods, except mail, will result in obtaining this number within a week; mail may take as long as a month.

Go online to fill out a business registration application for the state of Florida. It will ask for your EIN number. The Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation has a website at http://www.stateofflorida.com/Portal/DesktopDefault.aspx?tabid=134. When you select your business type from a given list, further instructions will guide you through the proper paperwork. Certain types of business will require exams or further permits.

Call Florida county and city government offices to check on the requirements and zoning for your location. The city clerk or county tax collector will have fee information for your municipality.
