Organizations That Accept Furniture Donations in Seattle, Washington

by Carrie Burns

Donating your used furniture can help someone on a tight budget create a more comfortable home or can help someone with very little transition into a livable space while getting his life back on track. Not only does donating your gently used and unwanted furniture help others, but it can be much less of a headache than trying to sell or consign your furniture. Many charities will even pick up furniture donations at no charge to you, making it a hassle-free way to pass along your things while leaving you feeling good about helping members of your community.

St. Vincent de Paul Council of Seattle, King County

The St. Vincent de Paul Society advocates for the poor, and will gladly accept donations of gently used furniture. It specifies that donations must not have rips, tears, missing or broken pieces or excessive pet hair or damage. The St. Vincent de Paul Society will also accept inner-spring mattresses and box springs, and it offers donation drop-off or scheduled pick-up. Pick-ups can be scheduled by calling 206-767-9975 or can be scheduled online (svdpseattle.org).

The Arc of Washington State

The Arc of Washington State is the Advocates for the Rights of Citizens with Developmental Disabilities. If you wish to have furniture donations picked up by The Arc of Washington State, and you live in Seattle, call the Southwest donation office at 800-826-4310. The Arc will schedule a time that is convenient for you to come by with a truck and haul away your furniture donations.

Seattle Goodwill

Goodwill accepts furniture donations with the exceptions of mattresses and box springs. Goodwill (seattlegoodwill.org) accepts only gently used furniture in working condition, since Goodwill does not have any way to repair furniture before selling it or giving it to a person or family in need. If you wish to donate larger pieces of furniture, check to see if your nearest Seattle Goodwill store has the ability to accept such donations. The bigger stores are better equipped to handle large furniture donations. Goodwill does not offer donation pick-up, so you will need to transport your furniture donations yourself.

The Sharehouse

The Sharehouse is a Seattle charity that collects donations of furniture and other goods required to help people establish a home after periods of homelessness. Donations are accepted by pick-up, which can be scheduled by calling 206-767-5280, or by dropping off goods during normal operating hours that vary daily. If you choose to schedule a pick-up for your donation, The Sharehouse (thesharehouse.org) requests that you consider the expense of sending a truck for your donation, approximately $75 per stop and $450 per day the truck is on the road. Consider having neighbors bring furniture donations to one centralized location to help with the expense of the pick-up.
