How Much Did It Cost to Build the Biltmore Mansion in Asheville, North Carolina?

by Monica Wachman

The 250-room, French Renaissance-style Biltmore mansion, designed by architect Richard Morris Hunt, took six years to build. George Washington Vanderbilt spent at least $5 million on the property, but the exact figure has not been made public.

About the Mansion and Grounds

At its peak, the estate covered 125,000 acres and included managed forestland, a dairy farm and gardens. A 3-mile railroad track was built to carry supplies and people to the building site, at a cost of about $80,000. Vanderbilt also built a 9-mile roadway leading through the property to the mansion's front door. Today the Biltmore is a tourist attraction and home to the Biltmore Winery, housed in the old dairy barn.
