How to Learn How to Pray

by braniac

There is lyrics to a song called the Sinner's prayer that I love the lyrics say: no prayer no power more prayer more power. This is essentially what we are with out prayer powerless. I am deployed right now to Afghanistan and I have ran into many people that don't necessarily believe in God that has asked me to pray for them. You have a different perceptive on what's real, and what matters when you have rocket attacks all the time and you hear the ambulance after the attacks.

In Luke chpt. 11. Jesus disciples ask him to teach them to pray, Jesus gives them a model to use when they pray. We too can use this same model to start a prayer life or deepen our current prayer life. Jesus started out by saying when you pray say Father hallowed by thy name. so when you start off praying start of by praising God for all the things he has done. Because God is our provider, our hope, our peace, our joy, our love, our deliverance and so much more we have so much to thank him for.

Next Jesus says in Luke 11, your kingdom come. This is where we pray for God's people his church and for people that have not yet hear about God's love. We should pray that these people accept Jesus as well. Before we even get to asking for what we want God wants us to praise him first, and pray for other people second.

Next Jesus tells us to give us our day our daily bread in Luke 11:3 Now we pray for our needs, because God is our provider he will take care of us. In Luke 11:4 Jesus says forgive us our sins as we also forgive everyone who sins against us. Now is the point we ask God to forgive us of any wrong we have done. Don't just say God I sinned be specific let God know what you specifically want forgiveness for. There is something powerful that happens when you ask forgiveness for specific sins. Jesus also directs us to forgive everyone who sins against us as well. It is no incident that we are directed to ask for forgiveness first before we forgive others.

The last thing Jesus tells us is in Luke 11:5 is to lead us not into temptation. This is where we pray to not fall into temptation. If we follow this model this will help our prayer life grow and grow. Prayer is not just about sending request to God it is also about listening to God as well. So as you pray listen to what God has to say.
