Gift Ideas for Sisters From Brothers

by William McCoy

Your sister might have driven you nuts as a teenager by spending too much time in the bathroom and using the phone for hours, but now that you're grown, it's easy to see the best in her. When her birthday or the holidays rolls around, show her the degree to which you care by handing her a carefully wrapped, thoughtful gift. When shopping for the right gift, weigh your sister's areas of interest with your budget.

Gifts for the Traveler

If your sister enjoys traveling, choose a compact-sized camera, a set of luggage or, if she vacations abroad, a translation book of common phrases. Other travel-inspired gift ideas include a travel journal, money belt or a wall map on which she can mark the countries she's visited. When shopping on a budget, put together a gift basket of travel-sized toiletries such as toothpaste, sunscreen and hand sanitizer. Double-check that all the toiletries gifted are the appropriate size of 3.4 ounces or less to go through security -- and toss in a box of quart-sized plastic bags, as required by the Transportation Security Administration, too.

Gifts for the Businesswoman

Whether your sister is a career-minded investment banker or runs a small part-time business from home, a number of business gifts can help her stay organized. Options include a new tablet computer, a chic book bag or, around the holidays, a leather-bound schedule book for the upcoming calendar year. Visit your local bookstore and buy a bestselling book of business or entrepreneurial strategies or opt for an insulated travel mug for her morning coffee. If you're on a budget, a high-capacity USB drive or a stylish pen holder for her desk are viable choices.

Gifts for the Party Host

For a sister who loves entertaining, buy a gift that she can use for an upcoming event. A designer cappuccino maker, a restaurant-style pepper grinder, a set of sushi dishes or a tree-style cupcake stand are viable gift ideas, depending on your budget. A colorful pair of oven mitts, a cookbook of appetizer recipes for parties or a couple packages of seasonal, fun cocktail napkins are suitable if you want to avoid overspending for her gift.

Gifts for the Mother

If your sister needs a little pampering after spending her days running after little ones, book her an appointment for a relaxation massage or a reflexology session or buy her a pass for a group of classes at a nearby yoga studio. You don't have to spend much money to give a thoughtful gift to your sister. Give her the gift of a day off by looking after her children for the day -- take them to a museum, the library or a movie theater -- and give her the chance to put her feet up and enjoy some quiet time.
