To be a well-rounded person, you must know a little bit about everything. From literature to current events to geography and music, a well-rounded person can hold a conversation with almost anyone. Being well rounded not only allows you to interact with a diverse and large group of people on a different level, but it can also give you a great sense of confidence and also aid in the development of other aspects in your personal and professional life

Read. Reading is probably your number one stepping stone into becoming a well-rounded person. It increases your vocabulary, exposes you to a plethora of ideas and might even inspire you in some way. In short, it makes you smarter. You have everything to gain and nothing to lose by picking up a book. If you're not interested in reading the struggles enduring during the Depression in John Steinbeck's "Grapes of Wrath," don't fear. Reading isn't confined just to books. Read your favorite magazines or newspapers. Spend one afternoon at your local bookstore or library, you will be surprised to find something that tickles your fancy, even if you weren't looking for anything in particular.

Current Events. There are more than 6 billion people living on Earth, so why do so many of us act like we are living alone under a rock? It's always a good idea to know what is currently going on in the world. It shows that you are an observant and open minded individual who cares about other people. There's no way that that can be a bad thing. Now, with most major newspapers, magazines and other news outlets being online and technology being a daily part of our lives, there is no excuse to not keep up with current events. Skimming through the front page of an online newspaper or turning on a national news channel while you're getting ready for work in the morning are easy things to do that don't take up a lot of time. Setting up your email so you receive news alerts from news organizations such as CNN or BBC is also another option. You check your email several times a day any way, why not learn something in the process? Listening to public radio will also give you exposure to human interest stories and features you probably won't find on your local news channel.

Expand your pop culture knowledge. Keeping up with current events is one thing, but pop culture is something everyone can relate to. It can start a solid conversation almost immediately. Take some time out to see what are the most talked about television shows, music and movies out there right now, even if you dislike any of them. Remember, this isn't about taste, this is about being in the know, and that means knowing about things you can appreciate and things you'd rather do without, like which young celebrity is entering rehab next. It wouldn't hurt to visit some entertainment blogs once in a while or catch a late night talk show to see what everyone is talking about.

Culture. Not only should you be familiar with your background and culture, but you should also take some time to educate yourself about the culture of others. Explore and familiarize yourself with the different ethnic groups in your community, watch international news and read up on your geography. Your goal isn't to become a cultural anthropologist, but to have a pretty solid understanding of where others than yourself come from.

Travel. There is no better way to become well-rounded than to travel. It is an experience you will never forget and one that you will take so much away from. Book a European adventure, take a cross-country road trip, or even take a day trip to a city not too far from where you live. Whichever way you do it, you're experiencing something new. Traveling introduces you to new ways of life, new people, places and cultures, and even though reading, consuming news and culture is important, exposing yourself first hand to new things and environments is the best way you can develop yourself as a person.

Items you will need

  • An Open Mind
  • Time
  • Dedication

Tip

  • Becoming well-rounded takes time and commitment. It's an ongoing process and there really is no specific time frame in which you become well-rounded. However, the longer you keep your goal in the back (or front) of your mind, the closer you will be to achieving it.
